Siemens NX CAM: The Short Version
Siemens NX CAM is the Manufacturing application on the same part you modeled. On NX for Manufacturing 2606 (19 June 2026) you create a program, a tool, an operation, generate, verify, post. inteliScience does this with DACH machine shops whose posts already exist. A Siemens NX CAM tutorial that never mentions the postprocessor is a cartoon.
| Step | What you actually do |
|---|---|
| 1 | Application > Manufacturing (or NX CAM) |
| 2 | Machine + MCS (orient the part as it sits in the vise) |
| 3 | Create a tool that exists in your library |
| 4 | Operation (Face Mill, Pocket, Hole) > Generate |
| 5 | Verify, then Post to the control you have |
The Problem: CAM YouTube Is Not Your Machine
“Siemens NX CAM” and “Siemens NX CAM Tutorial Deutsch” pull videos of a generic 3-axis mill posting to a phantom Fanuc. Your Heidenhain 640, your tool numbers, your holder collision, none of that is in the video.
NX CAM is a toolkit. The shop standard is a template part, a machine node, a library, a post. Without those, Generate makes pretty toolpaths that will not run.
We advise against starting with 5-axis. Face mill a block. Post it. Watch the machine. Then pocket.
The 2606 CAM session
Open the model. Application > Manufacturing. If you have no CAM license, NX will tell you. Student Edition 2026 includes NX CAM. NX X Manufacturing is the cloud/token cousin. AI Make Machining Suggestion (MMS) is NX X Manufacturing only, not every on-prem CAM seat.
Create Geometry: MCS. Point Z at the spindle. Wrong MCS is the number one “why is it cutting the table” call.
Create Tool. A 50 mm face mill that is in the library. Do not invent a tool you cannot hold.
Create Operation, Face Milling, select the top face, Generate. Replay. If the path looks like a child scribbled, your MCS or the floor plane is wrong.
Post. Pick the post that matches the machine, not “GENERIC.” If you have no post, you do not have CAM yet. You have a viewer.
Where AI MMS fits, and where it does not
NX X Manufacturing 2512 shipped AI Make Machining Suggestion. NX for Manufacturing 2606 added a third, history-free generative suggestion plus automatic parametric tools when the library has no match.
Select a face, right-click, Make Machining Suggestion. You get strategies for prismatic faces, holes, pockets. Click one to build the operation. Siemens quotes large CAM time savings (the CAM Copilot / MMS line has used figures around 80% programming time). Read that as “faster first path on a prismatic feature,” not “the post is done.”
MMS will not invent your shop’s 0.2 mm stock on floors. It will not know the probe cycle. It is a suggestion. You still own the template.
On-prem NX CAM 2606 without NX X does not get the AI version of that button. Do not buy a training course that assumes MMS if your license is classic CAM.
# After a CAM part exists: check for a CAM setup (NXOpen.CAM, NX 2606).
import NXOpen
session = NXOpen.Session.GetSession()
work = session.Parts.Work
cam = work.CAMSetup
print("CAM setup:", cam is not None)
If that setup is None, you never entered Manufacturing. The model is still just CAD.
This runs as a POC. What’s missing for production: Machine node, tool library, probe cycles, IPW, and a post that matches the control. We close that in NX training, including the NXOpen that standardizes it.
What to look for in a Siemens NX CAM tutorial
- License. CAM vs NX X Manufacturing vs Student.
- MCS first. Then tools.
- A real post. Name the control.
- MMS as optional. 2606 NX X only.
- One operation. Face mill, not a full 5-axis demo.
Siemens NX solutions for inteliScience includes CAM templates and posts, not a weekend of Generate. We would rather you post air cuts on a wood block than ship a pretty path.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Siemens NX CAM?
The Manufacturing application in NX / Designcenter that creates toolpaths and posts them to a machine control. It is a license on top of CAD. “Siemens NX CAM tutorial” should mean: MCS, tool, operation, post.
Is there a Siemens NX CAM tutorial in German?
Command names stay English in most DACH seats (Generate, Post). This English source is what we translate. The process is the same.
Does AI Make Machining Suggestion replace a CAM programmer?
No. On NX X Manufacturing 2606 it proposes feature strategies, including a history-free third option. You still pick tools, stock, and the post. Full-part agentic CAM is a Siemens roadmap item, not the 2606 default.
How much does NX CAM cost?
Seat price is a Siemens quote, Value Based Licensing on NX X. Student Edition 2026 includes CAM for learning. A production post is a project, often more than the license.
Can I learn NX CAM on Student Edition?
Yes, for Generate and verify. Siemens’ Student trial terms say CAM data is not available for post-processing. Treat Student paths as throwaway.
