Siemens NX CAD Quality: How to Automate Model Validation and Engineering Rules

Siemens NX CAD Quality: The Short Version

Siemens NX CAD quality is the degree to which parts, assemblies and drawings comply with the modelling, structure, naming, layer, PMI and drawing rules downstream processes depend on. It is measured by automated checks in NX, with Check-Mate or a product such as DOCUFY CAx Quality Manager. inteliScience, an official DOCUFY partner, turns company rules into repeatable checks and release gates.

What Is Siemens NX CAD Quality?

Siemens NX CAD quality is not the quality of the design. A brilliant design can be a poor CAD model: a solid that is not closed, a part number typed into a note instead of an attribute, a PMI frame that is decorative text, a drawing view that no longer updates. CAD quality is about whether the data behaves predictably when the next person or the next system uses it.

That definition matters because the users of CAD data are rarely the people who created it. A part is modelled once and consumed by drafting, CAM, CMM programming, simulation, the ERP import, the supplier’s viewer and, years later, the engineer who has to change it. Every one of those consumers relies on rules the author may never have seen written down.

Why CAD Quality Matters in NX Organizations

The cost of a CAD quality defect grows with every gate it passes. A missing material attribute costs seconds to fix at the designer’s desk, minutes at release, hours when the ERP import rejects the BOM, and days when a supplier machines the wrong alloy. DOCUFY, whose product we discuss below, frames the same point as detecting errors at an early stage to avoid additional iterations and manufacturing costs [1]. We see it in numbers our clients already have: rework loops, drawing corrections after release, CAM setups that stall on geometry that will not offset.

Two developments raise the stakes. Model-based definition moves information from the drawing into the model, so PMI quality becomes production quality. And the move to automation and AI in engineering, from NX Open tools to agents, only works on data that follows rules; an automation that reads a part attribute fails on every part where the attribute is empty.

Typical CAD Quality Problems in Siemens NX

The problems repeat across companies and industries. Our list from assessments, roughly in order of frequency:

  1. Empty or malformed attributes: material, part number, revision, designer, weight.
  2. Objects on wrong layers, or layer categories that ignore the template.
  3. Unused sketches, datum planes and expressions left in released parts.
  4. Suppressed features and broken links in released parts.
  5. Non-semantic PMI: text that looks like a tolerance but carries no meaning.
  6. Drawing views out of date, sheet sizes outside the standard, missing standard notes.
  7. Standard parts modelled by hand instead of taken from the reuse library.
  8. Naming conventions applied by habit, not by rule: expressions, features, components.
  9. Duplicate or near-duplicate parts because search fails on inconsistent metadata.
  10. Geometry issues in imported data: gaps, overlaps, sliver faces, non-manifold bodies.

None of these is exotic. Every one of them is checkable.

Manual Checking vs Automated Validation

Manual checking is a review by a colleague or a release engineer against a checklist, and it does not scale. In a department releasing hundreds of parts a month, the reviewer becomes the bottleneck, checks only what the checklist says, and misses whatever the checklist forgot. Automated validation runs the same checks on every part, every time, and reports the deviations while the part is still open.

TimingAt release, sometimes laterWhile modelling, at save, at release, in batch

The last row is the honest one. No checker knows whether a datum strategy is right for a part class or whether a tolerance is sensible. Automated validation enforces the rules that can be written down; the engineer keeps the judgement.

What to Validate: The Six Areas

Geometry

Geometry checks answer whether the model is fit for downstream consumption: closed solid bodies, no sliver faces below a minimum size, no self-intersections, no unused or unconstrained sketches, features that update without errors, mass properties assigned. Imported geometry deserves its own set of checks, which we cover in our article on CAD data quality after a migration to Siemens NX.

Model structure

Structure checks look at how the model is built: feature count and order, suppressed features in released parts, WAVE links and their status, reference sets defined, component arrangements, expressions that follow the naming convention and are actually referenced. A model with clean structure can be changed by someone who did not build it; that is the whole point.

Naming and attributes

Attribute checks are the fastest win in almost every organization because ERP and PLM depend on them. Required attributes present, formats correct (a part number pattern, a material from the approved list, a weight with the right unit), no conflicting duplicates between part and drawing, revision consistent with Teamcenter. Naming checks cover components, features, expressions and datasets.

Layers

Layer checks verify that objects sit on the categories the company template defines: solids, sketches, datums, PMI, construction geometry. Wrong layers break drafting templates, exchange filters and viewer configurations, and they are almost invisible to the person who caused them.

PMI

PMI checks verify that product and manufacturing information is semantic and complete: every feature control frame has a tolerance and a datum reference, datums exist and are attached to faces, model views are organized per the MBD template, no orphan annotations. Siemens’ own Check-Mate library covers PMI checks [2]; DOCUFY’s 2026.1 release added PMI view validation with attribute correction and PMI view count limits [3]. For the methods question behind PMI, see our article on MBD versus the 2D drawing.

Drawings

Drawing checks verify that views are up to date, the sheet size and template are allowed, the title block is filled from attributes, standard notes are present, dimensions are associative and no view is obsolete. Drawing view alignment inspection is one of the seven checks added in DQM 2026.1 [3].

Company Standards and Engineering Rules

The six areas above are generic. The rules that matter most are specific: your naming convention, your layer template, your material list, your datum strategy per part class, your standard-part policy. Encoding them is where CAD quality programmes succeed or stall, and it is a large enough topic that we treat it separately in our guide to automatically checking company design rules in Siemens NX. The short version: a rule that exists only in a PDF is a wish; a rule that runs as a check is a standard.

Batch Validation and Quality Gates

Batch validation

Interactive checks catch problems as they are made. Batch validation catches the problems that already exist: the vault, the legacy data, the migrated dataset, the supplier delivery. Both Check-Mate and DQM run in batch: Check-Mate offers a batch mode alongside interactive checking [2], DOCUFY positions batch processing of large data volumes for standards roll-outs and for reducing component variety [1]. A batch run before a rule goes live also tells you how many existing parts will fail it, which is the number the methods team needs before announcing the rule.

Quality gates

A quality gate makes the check a condition of release. In Teamcenter that means the check result lands where the release workflow can read it: Check-Mate results can be saved to Teamcenter, and DQM 2026.1 writes properties to Item Revisions and reads and writes the Validation Master Form [3]. Our clear recommendation: introduce gates one rule family at a time, starting with attributes, and measure the failure rate on real parts before the gate blocks anyone.

Correction and Healing

Finding a problem and fixing it are different jobs. Check-Mate reports findings with HD3D visual tags; the correction is the engineer’s, or the job of automation you build. DQM adds automated healing functions for supported checks and guided correction instructions for the rest [1]. DOCUFY does not claim that every check heals, and neither do we; but for high-volume findings such as attributes, layers and drawing housekeeping, healing is what turns a report into an enforced rule. We compared the two approaches in detail in our article on DOCUFY DQM versus Siemens NX Check-Mate.

DOCUFY CAx Quality Manager

DOCUFY CAx Quality Manager (DQM) is a quality assurance product fully integrated into Siemens NX with more than 450 standardized and configurable best-practice checks for 2D drawings and 3D parts, guided correction, automated healing for supported checks and batch processing [1]. Version 2026.1 of 30 March 2026 supports NX up to 2512 and extended the Teamcenter integration [3]. It is the product we implement when an organization wants configured checks owned by methods and quality rather than custom checkers owned by developers; our NX CAD quality checker page describes what it checks and how an evaluation works.

DQM + Vision4NX

inteliScience is an official DOCUFY partner, and Vision4NX technology from inteliScience is integrated into DQM. The division of labour is strict: the checks stay deterministic, Vision4NX contributes NX and engineering knowledge so that a finding is explained in the terms of the applicable standard or company guideline and the engineer gets the context for the decision. It does not invent rules and it does not decide tolerances.

Turning a PDF of rules into checks that run on every part? That is the work we do as a DOCUFY partner: rule catalogue, configuration against your guidelines, batch baseline on your vault, Teamcenter release gate. See how a DQM evaluation on your own NX data works

Implementation Considerations

A CAD quality initiative that lasts has five properties.

  1. A written rule catalogue with owners. Every rule names the standard it comes from and the role that may change it.
  2. A baseline. Run the checks in batch over the existing vault before any gate is switched on, and publish the failure rates.
  3. Rule families in sequence. Attributes and layers first, structure and geometry second, PMI and drawings third; each family goes live only when its healing or correction path is clear.
  4. Gates in Teamcenter, not in email. A check result that is not a release condition is advice.
  5. Metrics. Findings per part, share auto-healed, rework loops after release, before and after.

Whether the checks run in Check-Mate profiles, in DQM or in both, the catalogue, the baseline and the gate are the same work, and they are where we spend most of an implementation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Siemens NX model validation?

Siemens NX model validation is the automated checking of parts, assemblies and drawings against defined rules: geometry integrity, model structure, naming and attributes, layers, PMI and drawing standards. NX provides the Check-Mate framework with hundreds of standard checks and an authoring tool; dedicated products such as DOCUFY CAx Quality Manager add configured checks, guided correction and healing.

Which CAD quality checks should an NX team automate first?

Attributes and layers. They fail most often, they break ERP and PLM processes downstream, and they are the easiest to heal automatically. Structure and geometry follow, then PMI and drawings once the methods questions behind them are settled.

How much does automated CAD quality checking in NX cost?

Check-Mate ships with NX in many licence configurations; the cost is the effort to build and maintain profiles and custom checkers. DOCUFY offers a 90-day DQM evaluation package for company-wide use with customizing and consultant support, listed at €2,950 plus VAT for the DACH region; implementation effort depends on the size of the rule catalogue.

Manual CAD review vs automated validation: is manual review still needed?

Yes, for judgement: datum strategy, tolerance choices, design intent. Automated validation removes the rule-based part of the review, which is most of it, and lets the reviewer concentrate on what a checker cannot decide.

Can CAD quality checks be enforced at release in Teamcenter?

Yes. Check-Mate results can be saved to Teamcenter, and DQM 2026.1 writes check results as properties on Item Revisions and reads and writes the Validation Master Form, so a workflow handler can block a release on failed checks.
