Drawing & Documentation Assistant

Drawing & Documentation Assistant

Drawing & Documentation Assistant

The design took judgement. The drawing takes an afternoon. Only one of those should.

The Drawing & Documentation Assistant creates and updates drawings in Siemens NX from chat: views, sections, BOM tables and title-block data — “create a manufacturing drawing for this part, house standard, three views” — one part at a time, on your drawing template. The sheet is proposed as a preview; the engineer completes the dimensioning judgement, then reviews and releases. Conversational and ad hoc, not a batch pipeline.

It is the “document” member of our NX AI Assistants & Chatbots family — deliberately distinct from the deterministic Automated Drawing Generation covered by AI Workflow Automation for Siemens NX: that discipline runs rule-based over part families in batch; this assistant serves the single part in front of you, now.

Who this is for

  • Drawings for routine parts cost an afternoon each — view placement, sections, tables, title block, all by hand.
  • Model changes trigger sheet archaeology: which views, which tables, which notes are now stale?
  • Drawing quality varies by author — the template exists, adherence drifts.
  • One-off and spare-part drawings queue behind design work, blocking purchasing and manufacturing.
  • Batch drawing automation never fit you: your volume is many single parts, not one family of thousands.

// One request — one sheet, on your template

engineer> Manufacturing drawing for housing 5512, house standard: three views, section through the bore group, BOM, title block from Teamcenter.

Proposed sheet — preview, nothing released FRONT SIDE TOP A–A BOM · 12 positions TITLE BLOCK 5512 · rev A · from Teamcenter
  • 3 views placed per template
  • Section A–A through bore group
  • BOM from assembly structure
  • Title block filled from item master

The judgement stays on the sheet. The assistant builds the structure — views, section, tables, title block. The dimensioning that makes a drawing inspection-ready is finished and signed by the engineer on the proposed sheet.

Conversational here, batch over there — pick honestly

Drawing & Documentation Assistant

The part in front of you, documented now — ad hoc, one part at a time, template-true, engineer-released. For the daily trickle of single drawings.

Automated Drawing Generation

Rule-based drawing generation over part families at volume — deterministic, testable, nightly. When the same rules produce five hundred sheets, you want a pipeline, not a chat.

What it does on the sheet

Create

Manufacturing drawings from a request

Views placed per template, scale chosen, section through the feature you name — the sheet skeleton in seconds, not an afternoon.

Modify

Views & sections on demand

“Add a detail view of the groove, 5:1” — changes to existing sheets, proposed as previews the engineer accepts.

Tables

BOM & title-block data

Parts lists from the assembly structure, title blocks filled from the item master — typed by nobody, consistent with Teamcenter.

Update

Sheet updates after model changes

“Update the drawing for rev B and tell me what moved” — stale views refreshed, changes listed for review instead of hunted for.

How it connects

Sheets are built through NX Drafting via the Vision4NX Connector and NXOpen — native drawing objects on your template, not exports. BOM and title-block data come from your assembly structure and Teamcenter item master. On-premises or EU cloud; model-agnostic on the assistant side via MCP.

Honest limits

It builds the sheet; the engineer makes it inspection-ready. View structure, sections, tables and standard annotations follow your template and dimensioning rules — but the final dimensioning judgement (what the inspector needs, what manufacturing reads first) is finished and signed by the engineer. A drawing carries liability; the release stays human, and the assistant’s proposals are always previews until accepted.

One part at a time is a feature, not a limitation we hide. If your need is five hundred sheets from one rule set, stop reading this page and take the deterministic batch route — it will be cheaper per sheet and testable. This assistant exists for the opposite case: the constant trickle of individual parts that batch rules never fit.

  • Purchasing and manufacturing waiting on documentation, not design

Frequently asked questions

What is an NX drawing assistant?
An NX drawing assistant creates and updates drawings in Siemens NX from chat requests: it places views and sections per the company template, fills BOM tables and title-block data, and refreshes sheets after model changes — one part at a time, with every sheet proposed as a preview the engineer reviews and releases.
How is this different from automated drawing generation?
Volume and trigger. Automated drawing generation is deterministic and batch: fixed rules produce hundreds of sheets for part families, on schedule. The assistant is conversational and ad hoc: the single part in front of you, documented from a sentence. Most drawing portfolios need both — we help you split them honestly.
Does it dimension the drawing?
It applies your template’s standard dimensioning and annotation rules as a starting set; the judgement-heavy final dimensioning — inspection relevance, manufacturing readability — is finished by the engineer on the proposed sheet. Structure from the assistant, judgement from the human, release from the human.
Can it change existing drawings, not just create new ones?
Yes — adding views and sections, refreshing after model revisions, updating tables. Changes are proposed as previews, and updates come with a list of what changed on the sheet, so review is a scan rather than a search.
Where do BOM and title-block data come from?
From the assembly structure and your Teamcenter item master — mapped in the PoC to your attributes. The point is single-source consistency: data typed by nobody, matching PLM by construction.
Does it work with our drawing template and standards?
It works only with them — the template and your drafting standard are encoded first in the PoC, and your checkers judge template conformity on real sheets. An off-template sheet is a defect we fix, not a style choice.

Related in the family: the Geometry Creation Assistant creates the parts these sheets document, and the MBD & PMI Authoring Assistant covers the model-based route where drawings retire. Overview: NX AI Assistants & Chatbots.

Which drafting operations the tools behind this assistant run in NX today, and how every sheet is checked, is described under AI 2D drawing creation in Siemens NX.

Your best designer shouldn’t spend Thursday afternoon placing three views of a housing.

Send us one part and your drawing template — we’ll return the manufacturing drawing built from a single chat request: house standard, three views, section, filled title block.
