NXOpen API Migration: The Short Version
NXOpen API migration is the work of moving journals and compiled NX Open libraries onto the next Siemens NX (Designcenter) release without stopping production tools. inteliScience, a Romania nearshore engineering partner one hour ahead of CET, treats each six-month drop as a compile-and-diff job. The result is automation that still runs on Designcenter 2606.
The Problem: Tools That Only Run on Last Year’s NX
NXOpen API migration fails when IT upgrades the CAD seat and the overnight journal or signed add-in does not start. Siemens NX is not the problem. Seats that never rebuilt against the new NXBIN assemblies are. Named drops arrive about every six months. Monthly updates are not an excuse to skip the rebuild.
We see the same stall on DACH programs. A journal from 2019 became a DLL in 2021. NX moved twice. Nobody retargeted the project. The day Designcenter 2606 lands, the menu item is gone.
Our recommendation: keep NX current, and treat NXOpen API migration as scheduled engineering. Packaging (journal versus signed library) is in journal versus compiled NXOpen. This post stays on version-to-version breakage.
What Actually Breaks Between NX Releases
Binary references, retired Open C entry points, and journal identifiers from an old recording are what break. The NXOpen object model stays. Treat each six-month release as a new compiler target, not a rewrite of the design rules you already encoded.
Siemens started Continuous Release in 2019. Year-month names began with NX 2206 in June 2022. In January 2025 the suite was labeled Designcenter NX. On 23 June 2026 Siemens said the June 2026 release was available to download, with the CAD name Designcenter (family 2606). The next named family is 2612. Siemens ran a Designcenter 2612 Early Access Program in September 2026, including a virtual week 31 August to 4 September and on-site weeks in Mason, Ohio.
| Layer | What usually survives | What we budget time for |
|---|---|---|
| NXOpen .NET / Python | Session, Part, most builders | Members marked obsolete, then removed later |
Open C / NXOpen.UF | Calls with a documented successor | UF_* names with no successor |
| Project file | Source you own | Old NXOpen.dll, NXOpen.UF.dll, NXOpen.Utilities.dll, NXOpenUI.dll refs |
| Journal | The algorithm | FindObject("...") strings from one session |
| Signing | Author on the build seat | Signing resource rebuilt for the new kit |
The splash-screen rebrand is not an API break. Bindings remain C++, C# and VB.NET, Java, and Python. Siemens documents “NX Open differences between releases” in the NX 2206 release notes. Read the same topic for the version you are entering.
Deprecated is not deleted. A strikethrough can last more than one drop. We’d rather fix the warning on the previous named family than debug a missing export on 2606 with the shop already upgraded.
How We Find a Deprecated NX Open API
You find a deprecated NX Open API by pointing the compiler at the new NX libraries and walking every obsolete member the IDE flags. Release notes first. Grep second. A 2014 forum list is how you “fix” calls that are not even in your tree.
Release notes, then the Open kit
Open “NX Open differences between releases” for the target version. The 2206 notes show the public pattern. Your Support Center copy for 2606 is the one that counts. A journal that drives a retired NX command fails even when C# compiles. Open C kits ship uf_legacy_header.txt, uf_legacy_source.txt, and uf_ui_legacy_source.txt for old FORTRAN-era names. Use those files or replace the call. Do not invent a signature.
Retarget NXBIN and rebuild
For .NET, drop the old NXBIN refs and add NXOpen.dll, NXOpen.UF.dll, NXOpen.Utilities.dll, NXOpen.Guide.dll, and NXOpenUI.dll from the new install. Rebuild. Strikethrough plus tooltip is the spec when Siemens named a successor. Empty tooltip: stop and read the differences list.
Python journals skip that strikethrough. Play them on a sandbox 2606 seat. Failures arrive as exceptions, later than a C# rebuild. Our clear recommendation: if a Visual Studio project exists, migrate that first, then the journal.
- Diff the last green build against new
NXBINdates. - Rebuild with obsolete NXOpen members as errors on the critical path.
- Search the repo for
UF_,uc, andFindObject(. - Play each journal on a sandbox seat, one folder at a time.
- Diff listing-window output against a golden part.
Skip step 2 and you will “finish” a journal migration that still links the old DLLs.
A Migration Order That Keeps Automation Running
Migrate the compiler target, then critical-path UF_* calls, then journals, then the seats. Never the other way around. Users first means a dark menu and a war room. inteliScience runs the rebuild as nearshore engineering from Romania (EET, CET+1, not the DACH clock).
- Inventory. Every
.vb,.cs,.py,.cpp,.dll, and menu file, plus who launches it. - Sandbox NX. Install the target next to the current seat. Do not overwrite production
UGII_BASE_DIRuntil the suite is green. - Empty rebuild. New NXBIN refs only. Fix compile errors, no logic edits.
- Critical path. Obsolete calls on the nightly job. Cosmetic journals later.
- Golden part. One reference
.prtand output you can diff. - Sign and deploy. New signing resource, pilot group, then the floor.
- Only then let IT retire the previous NX.
Smoke-test the sandbox with session, work part, and listing window.
# Sandbox smoke test, Designcenter 2606. Recorded-journal shape.
import NXOpen
theSession = NXOpen.Session.GetSession()
workPart = theSession.Parts.Work
lw = theSession.ListingWindow
lw.Open()
if workPart is None:
lw.WriteLine("FAIL: no work part")
else:
lw.WriteLine("OK: work part is loaded")
lw.Close()
If that block cannot print OK on 2606, fix the install before you touch feature builders. Fifty journals and three DLLs is then software maintenance, not a CAD-admin afternoon.
This runs as a POC. What is missing for production: version pinning, a second engineer who can rebuild, golden-part diffs in CI, and a calendar on every six-month NX drop instead of a weekend scramble. We take journals and DLLs that still only run on last year’s seat and keep them alive on the current Designcenter release: NX Open legacy code modernization.
What Usually Survives, and What We Refuse to Quick-Fix
Parametric intent, Block UI Styler .dlx files you still have, and golden-part tests survive an NX Open upgrade. Recorded FindObject strings and copy-pasted Open C from 2004 do not. We refuse the “wrap the old DLL and hope” shortcut.
FindObject is a snapshot of one session. Replay it on a restructured part and the identifier is gone. During journal migration, select by type, attribute, or a builder you own.
NXOpen.UF remains because large estates still call it. Put a warning budget on the critical path, then eat the rest across two Continuous Release cycles (twelve months). A full UF purge in one weekend is how CAM regressions land. Pair NX with that practice. Do not freeze the seat instead.
Cost and Calendar: Two Named Releases a Year
Budget NXOpen API migration as a repeating line, not a one-off project. Two named families a year (2206 then 2212, now 2606 with 2612 already in EAP) is the clock. Monthly updates are the wrong week to retarget DLLs.
Siemens’ NX CAD product page states Continuous Release every six months since 2019, with year-month names from NX 2206 (June 2022). We soak monthly updates on a pilot seat and retarget NXBIN on the named family.
We will not invent a euro figure Siemens does not print. An empty rebuild of one compiling C# add-in is hours. A folder of unsigned journals with no repo is weeks. Author signing is a Siemens quote. Put the empty rebuild on the calendar before EAP. Teams at the September 2026 Designcenter 2612 EAP already had a sandbox.
Frequently Asked Questions
NXOpen API migration questions from CAD admins cluster on timing, cost, journals versus DLLs, and whether a rewrite would be cheaper. Answers below stand alone. If the estate is more than one add-in, the next step is a scoped inventory, not another forum thread.
What breaks first in an NXOpen API migration?
Compiled references to previous NXBIN copies of NXOpen.dll, then obsolete members that were warnings last release, then FindObject strings. The session object model is not what fails on day one. Your project file is.
How do I find a deprecated NX Open API call without guessing names?
Retarget Visual Studio at the new NX binaries and read every obsolete tooltip. Cross-check “NX Open differences between releases” for that version. For Python, play the journal on a sandbox seat. If Siemens docs do not name a successor, leave the call.
How much does NXOpen API migration cost?
Siemens does not publish a list price for migrating NX Open. Count Author on the build seat, sandbox NX you already own, and engineering time. A clean C# add-in is hours. A folder of unsigned journals with no tests is a multi-week inventory. Ask your Siemens partner for 2026 license numbers.
Is NXOpen API migration better than rewriting the automation?
Yes, when the automation still matches the process. Rebuild, replace obsolete calls, add a golden-part diff. A rewrite wins when the journal encodes a dead process, or the source is missing. We’d advise against a rewrite as the default reaction to a six-month NX drop.
Should we skip monthly NX updates until the next named release?
No. Monthly updates are Siemens’ soak path for fixes. Keep them on a pilot seat. Do NXOpen API migration against the named family (2606 now, 2612 next).
Next Step
If journals still only run on the NX install IT wants to retire, book a 60-minute pass over inventory, sandbox, and the DLL on the critical path. inteliScience does that as NX Open engineering from Romania, on the EET clock, not as a staffing pitch.
