NX Sheet Metal vs Solid Edge for Enclosures (2026)

NX Sheet Metal vs Solid Edge: The Short Version

NX Sheet Metal vs Solid Edge is a question of organisation, not bend quality: both are Siemens products on Parasolid and both unfold a cabinet correctly. inteliScience builds enclosure and cabinet models in NX for DACH energy-equipment makers and receives Solid Edge data from their suppliers, so we see both sides of the exchange. Solid Edge fits the shop that ships sheet metal. Siemens NX (Designcenter) fits the OEM whose cabinet is one branch of a larger assembly.

The Problem: Siemens Sells Both and Answers Neither

Ask a Siemens partner which system your switch-cabinet line should run on and you get a licensing conversation, not an engineering one. Since the 2026 product cycle both carry the Designcenter name: the on-premise CAD formerly called NX is now Designcenter (first release Designcenter 2606, June 2026), and Solid Edge ships as Designcenter Solid Edge 2026. The naming got closer. The products did not merge, and Siemens has no reason to rank one of its own products below the other. The buyer does.

We see the question in three places: a panel builder that outgrew 2D, a transformer accessory maker whose parent standardised on NX, and an enclosure supplier receiving Solid Edge data from one customer and NX data from another. Each of them types the same German query, “NX Sheet Metal vs Solid Edge Blech”, and finds two brochures.

This article is the system choice. The flat-pattern craft (Customer Defaults, neutral factor, bend tables, Inherit Flat Pattern PMI) is a separate how-to: NX flat pattern setup. Read that after you have picked the system.

What does each sheet metal environment give an enclosure team?

Both cover the straight-brake job completely. The difference is what sits around the sheet metal application: Solid Edge treats sheet metal as a first-class product line, NX treats it as one application inside a multi-discipline part.

Siemens describes NX Sheet Metal as tools that “incorporate material and bending information, enabling the model to represent both the formed component and flattened blank shapes,” with company defaults for bend radius and neutral factor. The current How-to series (14 August 2025) walks through Tab, Flange, Bead, Jog, Contour Flange and Flat Pattern, plus the drafting toggle Inherit Flat Pattern PMI that pushes bend callouts onto the flat view. Advanced flanges on non-linear edges sit in an add-on license, which is visible in the API: the NXOpen AdvancedFlangeBuilder needs adv_sheet_metal_dsgn or nx_flexible_pcb, while FlatPatternBuilder needs plain nx_sheet_metal.

Solid Edge lists its commands on the official sheet metal page: Emboss, Dimple, Drawn Cutout, Bead, Multi-Edge Flange, Contour Flange, Straight Brake, Etch, Lofted Flange, plus Part to Sheet Metal for converting a solid and Blank Body for press flat patterns. Bend tables are stored in the 3D part and exported to program CNC machines. Solid Edge 2025 added bend deduction and bend allowance as selectable calculation methods next to the Excel gage tables. Designcenter Solid Edge 2026 (launched 22 October 2025) added tab-and-slot automation, wall-thickness controls inside Extrude, Revolve, Sweep and Loft, etching on curved faces, multi-edge flange trimming and a Fill Pattern that survives bends.

Tab and slot, lofted flange for ducting, blank body for press work: these are fabricator features. NX has equivalents for most of them, but Siemens sells them to the NX buyer as part of “design,” not as part of “the shop.” Neither system replaces the bend table your brake actually measured. That gap hurts identically in both.

NX Sheet Metal vs Solid Edge: the comparison that matters for cabinets

Eight criteria decide this in practice. Weight them for your organisation, not for the demo.

Criterion Solid Edge Designcenter (NX) Who should care
Straight-brake features (tab, flange, jog, bead, dimple)Complete, sheet-metal-first UIComplete, inside a general modeling partEveryone; tie

Nothing in this table is a knockout. Solid Edge packages the whole fabricator workflow in one box, NX packages the whole product in one box. Pick the box that matches what you sell.

When which: a decision by organisation type

Our clear recommendation: Solid Edge for the enclosure shop whose deliverable is sheet metal, NX for the OEM whose cabinet is one branch of a larger assembly, and the existing PLM as the tie-breaker. Buying the other one because a brochure looked stronger is how a shop ends up paying for Routing it never opens.

Enclosure shop or panel builder (ships cut and bent metal). Solid Edge. The synchronous editor handles the customer’s STEP or Parasolid cabinet without rebuilding a tree, 2D Nesting closes the loop to the laser, and sheet metal, frames and weldments sit in the same subscription. You will not miss NX Routing. You will miss Solid Edge nesting the day you move to NX.

OEM with a product line (transformer, switchgear, drives) where the cabinet holds something. NX. The enclosure is a WAVE-linked child of the tank or the busbar layout, the drawing set is PMI on the same part the CAM programmer opens, and Teamcenter already owns the item. A second CAD for the sheet metal branch means a second data model, a second author license and a second set of Customer Defaults to keep aligned.

Accessory maker between the two (terminal boxes, bushings, glands with a housing). Whatever the largest customer runs, because you receive their geometry more often than you send yours. If both send data, Solid Edge is the cheaper seat to keep as a second reader.

Group with a parent on NX and a plant on Solid Edge. Keep both, but write the exchange rule down (next section). We advise against forcing a plant off Solid Edge for the sake of one CAD logo. If you do move a plant onto NX, treat it as a project: NX implementation and rollout covers defaults, templates and the first managed part.

How do the two exchange cabinets? Parasolid, Part Copy, Teamcenter

Geometry moves cleanly. Features do not. Siemens’ own wording is that Designcenter Solid Edge and the NX-based Designcenter X Essentials “share the Parasolid kernel” so “designs move between systems without translation or loss of fidelity.” That sentence is about bodies, faces and edges, and it is true. Your sheet metal feature tree is not a Parasolid body.

Three exchange paths exist, and they behave differently:

  1. Solid Edge to NX. Solid Edge 2023 added material and physical properties that are “seamlessly translated to NX” and PMI transfer including section and model views; Solid Edge 2025 added kinematic transfer to NX MCD and multi-frame feature control frames arriving in NX as true PMI. What arrives is a body with attributes and PMI. The flange, jog and bend features stay in Solid Edge.
  2. NX to Solid Edge. Solid Edge reads the NX geometry as a Parasolid body: faces, edges, attributes. NX features do not arrive. Whether a Part Copy of that body stays associative to the NX source depends on your Solid Edge version and setup, so test it on your own seat before you promise the group a live link.
  3. Through Teamcenter. Teamcenter Integration for Solid Edge creates and tracks revisions of Solid Edge parts, assemblies and drawings; NX runs managed natively. Both sides see the same item. The JT and the released drawing are the contract; the native files stay in their own CAD.

In our project work the rule that survives is simple: one CAD owns the feature tree of a given part, the other consumes a body. A cabinet “improved” on both sides is two cabinets with one part number. That is a quality topic, not a translator setting.

Ready to set up the sheet metal side properly? Customer Defaults, bend tables that match the brake, templates with Inherit PMI and the NXOpen checks behind them are what our NX CAD design services deliver as one pack.

Automation: NXOpen vs the Solid Edge API for cabinet generators

The API is where the two products stop being equal, and the difference is architectural, not “which one has more calls.” Solid Edge exposes a COM object model; NX exposes NXOpen with a license gate per feature family. Both can generate a cabinet from a spec. They fail in different places.

Solid Edge’s API starts at SolidEdgeFramework.Application, then a SolidEdgePart.SheetMetalDocument whose FlatPatternModels property returns the flat pattern collection. Siemens documents it for VB.NET, C#, C++ and Python. It is comfortable for a shop that wants every flat pattern exported to DXF at check-in. It runs against a live Solid Edge session, so a headless batch on a build server is a decision you take early.

NXOpen is one API in C#, C++, Python and Java, on the same part the CAM and drafting code touch. The sheet metal builders live in NXOpen.Features.SheetMetal and each declares its license feature in the reference, so a generator that calls AdvancedFlangeBuilder fails on a seat that only has nx_sheet_metal. Check the tree before you build anything:

# Designcenter 2606, NXOpen Python: list feature types in the work part.
# Run in a sheet metal part to see which feature families a generator must produce.
import NXOpen

session = NXOpen.Session.GetSession()
work = session.Parts.Work

for feature in work.Features:
    print(feature.FeatureType, feature.GetFeatureName())

If the output shows the flange and flat pattern feature types you expect, the generator has a target. If the part is a plain solid with no sheet metal features, you are looking at an imported cabinet, and no amount of NXOpen will unfold it until someone converts it.

Where NXOpen wins for an OEM: one signed add-in creates the cabinet, places it in the WAVE-linked assembly, writes the PMI and pushes the item to Teamcenter in one run. Where the Solid Edge API wins for a shop: a working DXF exporter is an afternoon, and synchronous edits on imported geometry are scriptable without a feature tree. Our position: do not pick the CAD for its API. Pick it for the organisation, then automate what that CAD does well. The wider NX case is written up as Siemens NX automation.

What changed in 2026, and what did not

The 2026 releases moved names and shop features, not the decision. Designcenter 2606 (June 2026) is the first release under the new name; Siemens headlined sketch, assemblies, AI and Immersive Engineering, not sheet metal. Designcenter Solid Edge 2026 did headline sheet metal (tab and slot, wall thickness, curved-face etching, flange trimming, Fill Pattern) and keeps a steady train of numbered updates through 2026.

The rename matters for one practical reason: help pages and partner slides now mix “NX,” “Designcenter” and “Designcenter Solid Edge,” while NX CAM keeps the NX name. When a supplier says “we run Designcenter,” ask which one.

What did not change: the Parasolid body is still the exchange currency, Teamcenter still owns the item, and the bend table still lives in your shop.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is NX Sheet Metal vs Solid Edge a question of capability?

Not for enclosures and switch cabinets. Both unfold, both carry bend tables in the part, both put bend data on drawings. The difference is packaging: Solid Edge bundles sheet metal, frames, weldments and 2D Nesting around the fabricator; NX puts sheet metal inside a multi-discipline part with Routing, PMI, CAM and Teamcenter on the same file.

Can Solid Edge open NX parts and keep them associative?

Solid Edge reads NX geometry as a Parasolid body; the NX feature tree never comes across. A plain Open gives you a body without a link. Whether a Part Copy of NX data stays associative depends on your version and setup, so verify it on your seat. In the other direction, NX receives Solid Edge bodies with material properties and PMI, not Solid Edge features.

Which Solid Edge tier do we need for sheet metal?

Siemens lists four desktop subscriptions: Design and Drafting, Foundation, Classic and Premium. Sheet metal, frames and weldments are not in the entry tier; which tier bundles them shifts with Siemens’ packaging. In the cloud line, Designcenter X Solid Edge Standard already includes them. Confirm the current bundle with your reseller before you count seats.

How much does the wrong choice cost?

Not the license. The bill is the second data model: two sets of Customer Defaults, two bend tables, two drawing templates and one exchange rule nobody wrote down. Groups carry that longer than anyone planned, because the wrong plant got the wrong CAD in a good year. A day on the organisation question is cheaper than a quarter on migration.

Does NX have nesting like Solid Edge 2D Nesting?

No native module. Solid Edge 2D Nesting reads PSM, PAR, DXF and DWG, extracts the flat pattern and hands nests to Solid Edge CAM Pro or another CAM. For NX, Siemens points to partner nesting software fed by the flat pattern export. If you cut your own blanks, that is a real argument for the Solid Edge side.
